"Beautiful cottage a true home from home."
The dogs loved the treats left for them and cozied up together on the huge bed together after our days out. Everything and every room was spotless. Great central location to Matlock, Bakewell and Chatsworth house. A pub 5 mins walk serving decent food (dog friendly) and a local shop 5 mins drive or for bigger shops Tesco and Aldi 10 mins drive.
We had a lovely time and hope to book again next year.
The owner was lovely and communication was fab, even put some decs up on my hubbys request .which was a lovely surprise.
5 star all the way.

Loved the under-floor heating. The log burner wasn't needed to keep the lounge warm, but lovely to see real flames. The kitchen is very well-equipped. Plenty of toys and treats for the dog, and he loved his mattress in the lounge. The owner, Kate, is charming and helpful. We had a lovely time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cottage.

"This is a beautifully restored cottage, tucked away down a small lane in a lovely village."
Kate the owner has gone to great lengths to ensure a very comfortable stay, with lots of additions including arrival treats for us and a cozy bed, toys and treats for our dog. The garden is secure for dogs too.
The only slight downside is the lack of parking- however, this is made clear in the listing and we never struggled to find a place to park the car on the nearby street. It's less than a minute to walk down the lane with your things.
The location was close enough to our workplace (this was a working holiday for us) in Chesterfield to be near amenities, but far enough away to feel like you're getting away from it all.

Just from opening the door the cottage felt so welcoming. It was beautifully clean and very well appointed. The living room so comfy and the log burner a joy, gloriously large family bathroom and comfy beds upstairs. The kitchen was so well stocked with everything the family needed to cook big or small meals and a well proportioned fridge/freezer. The listing mentioned the stairs and not for those with limited mobility but we were fine and yes there was renovation going on next door but as a detached cottage it didn't detract from a wonderful and relaxing stay. "We had a lovely time at 33 Main Road!"
It was clear that a lot of time and effort had gone into the maintenance, decor and amentities of the cottage. It was the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in. There were treats for our dog (and for us), poo bags, day rucksacks and every kitchen utensil you could ask for.
The location of the cottage was great, there was a pub (the greyhound) in easy walking distance which did great food and there were walks for the dog from the cottage.
Everything in the cottage was immaculately clean and everything was lovely quality.
There was some scaffold on an adjacent property, but we did not encounter any problems with noise or dust.
The cottage does have a lovely fully enclosed rear garden which is great if you have a dog.
The weather was too good to need the woodburner but we would love to return and make use of it in the future.
Overall we can highly recommend this cottage, the neigbhours were very friendly and the owner was lovely - even contacting us to let us know we could get early entry if we needed it.

"What a place, truly felt like 5 star."
Cottage is so well maintained, furnished beautifully and overall just fabulous.
Living room, comfy, lots of books and games with easy to work tv and a great dog sofa! Downstairs bathroom, beautiful bath and unique shower. Kitchen had everything you would need, (some places we have stayed don’t even have salt) this had lots of things you would need like oil, salt and pepper, washing up liquid etc, and was so very clean. Dining room we didn’t really use other than for the information on local attractions leaflets but was lovely. The hallway had great boot storage area and coat hooks for convenience and the whole downstairs had underfloor heating which was lovely.
Garden beautifully enclosed for the dog and although there is building work next door it’s really not an issue. Never heard a thing and didn’t interfere with our holiday once.
Upstairs was just a lovely, super comfy bed, lovely bed linen and great shower. Stairs are a little steep though.
Cottage is in a beautiful spot for walking and was a lovely break for us to just relax and walk. The owner really does care about this property and in my opinion has thought of everything. Would highly recommend this property.

"The cottage is absolutely beautiful and neighbours are very friendly."
We had lots of chats about dogs with several of them. The enclosed garden was a real boon, meaning that we did not have to take our dogs for a walk before going out for the day. Our dogs really enjoyed the doggy sofa, the dog treats and the toys. Although the stairs, as highlighted in the description, were very steep, I managed them as a determined quadruple amputee!
The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed chilling in the lounge in the evenings.
There's so much to see in the area that we filled our days very easily. We visited lots of National Trust and English heritage properties as well as some parks and trails. We recommend the Greyhound pub which is only about a 10 minute walk away.

"The property was clean and well stocked although it would have been better if there was an initial supply of wood and kindling for the fire (particularly as we found the cottage to be extremely cold even with the underfloor heating)."
During our stay the weather was unseasonably cold even for January. The cold seemed to seep in through the velux windows on the lounge. It would have been helpful if there were blinds that could have been closed to help keep the heat in. The back door also had issues in opening and closing due to the wood swelling with the bad weather. Otherwise a charming well presented property with lots of games, DVDs and information about the local area. Very dog friendly with treats and a safe enclosed garden.
Hello Amanda,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your stay at my cottage.
I’m pleased that you found the cottage to be well stocked and you enjoyed the welcome pack I left along with the supply of games and films, and I’m happy that your dog enjoyed their stay and the biscuits!
I can only apologise that you found the cottage to be extremely cold during your stay. There was a cold snap during your stay which is usual for the Peak District region during winter. The underfloor heating downstairs is set between 19 and 20 degrees daily between 5am and 10pm and 15 degrees from 10pm until 5am, whilst the bedroom radiators come on for 1.5-2 hours morning and evening.
The underfloor heating is a constant ambient heat, and previous guests have commented how warm and cosy they have found it during cold weather, and I also found this to be the same whilst the cottage was my home. It has therefore really surprised me that you found it so cold based on both my own experience and the feedback I’ve received from other guests, however I do appreciate that you did feel cold and so I can only apologise that you didn’t find the cottage to be warm enough during your stay.
It would have been helpful if you had contacted me during your stay, as that would have given me the opportunity to remedy the situation and increase the temperature of the thermostats to your comfort level - as your review and rating is the first I am aware that you found the cottage to be too cold. The last thing I want is for people to be uncomfortable during their stay and presumably this would have solved your issue with feeling cold and as per your rating, it seems to have somewhat spoiled your time at my cottage.
I note that you made good use of the log burner during your stay, so I do hope this helped to keep you warm and that you enjoyed the ambience it provides. Thank you for your suggestion regarding a starter pack.
The hardwood door into the garden unfortunately sustained some damage during your stay, however it has now been fixed.
I hope you otherwise enjoyed your stay at the cottage and were able to explore some of the local area and all that it has to offer, despite the chilly weather you experienced.

"Nice cottage, well equipped and beautifully positioned for the Amber Valley."
The cottage has a lovely historic staircase but if you have any mobility issues it may be challenging.
The cottage could do with less instruction notices, they are everywhere which is a bit intrusive and spoils the feel of the place perhaps asking people to leave the cottage as you find it should be enough!!
The garden is behind the cottage so no outside seating (apart from at the front which was a bit over looked). Neighbours were really friendly though (and have five cats which may be an issue if you have a cat hating dog!).
It’s a lovely cottage and Kate has thought of everything to make your stay very comfortable.
Hi Katy,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your time at the cottage. I’m so pleased you all enjoyed your time away and found the cottage to be lovely and well equipped.
The listing on Sykes does inform guests that the stairs are steep and narrow prior to their booking and are unfortunately not suitable for those with limited mobility so hopefully this prevents guests from booking who may find this to be an issue for them. I’m pleased you were able to navigate them and found them to have an interesting history!
As the cottage is a single layer of sandstone build in the early 1800s, it needs to be well ventilated to prevent damp and mould issues on the exposed stone walls, stone shower floor and the mullioned windows, particularly in winter weather. Brief ventilation during changeovers is not sufficient to prevent these issues.
I can only apologise that you found the housekeeping and ventilation related requests to be intrusive and spoiled the feeling of the cottage for you, but ultimately the property is a holiday let, and I have a responsibility to make sure that the cottage remains a pleasant, comfortable and safe place for future guests too. This seems to have been the most successful way of ensuring that the cottage is looked after by guests during their holiday, as historic homes often need additional care compared to a more modern property.
Best wishes,

The only negative is not being able to park at the door and having to carry all your luggage from the main road.
Hello Carolyn,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your time at the cottage.
Thank you for your kind comments, I'm so pleased you found it was well equipped and you had everything you needed for your dog too.
The property is advertised as having roadside parking available on the Main Road approximately 40m away from the cottage, so guests should be aware of the parking arrangements prior to booking to stay at the cottage.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

"Lovely holiday cottages."
The owner left us flowers, biscuits, wine and toffees for when we arrived. There was everything we required in the cottage, even a lovely big bed, treats and poo bags for the dog. I forgot to bring coffee but there was some in the cupboard. The cottage is in a lovely village and quite central for places to visit. There is a lovely dog walk a little way from the cottage, which has lovely views. The owner has left lots of leaflets and books outlining various places of interest nearby. There also lots of books and games in the cottage to entertain guests in the evening after a long day out. The Greyhound pub is close by and very dog friendly. We had to leave early because of the terrible weather, which was a shame, just have to come back again. Angela and Ian

I'm so pleased you both enjoyed your stay and enjoyed exploring the local area, what a shame you had to leave early due to the wet weather.

"One of the best cottages we have stayed in, beautiful decor and very homely."
The treats for both human and dogs greatly appreciated. The attention to detail is what makes this cottage 5 ⭐️ .
The dogs loved the doggy sofa, may look at getting one of those when we return home!
The weather has been on our side and the walks have been incredible especially Winnats
Pass/Castleton.
Thank you Kate for a memorable holiday we will return.

"This is a lovely cottage which has been renovated to a very high standard."
The owner went to lot of trouble to make us feel very comfortable - all of us including our cockapoo. The owner was also very responsive to any queries we had. Pleased to give a full recommendation.

"The cottage is so lovely."
We arrived in the dark so always a bit tricky but our instructions were so spot on we found the keys and everything we needed easily. The interior is very stylish with well thought out touches & the dog “station” was totally unexpected but so well equipped. The kitchen also! The beds were super comfy & good storage.
We loved the village and enjoyed some great fish & chips from Wessingtons (short drive away) Both my friend & I were very taken with our cottage in Higham & we both said we would go back. Thank you Kate - it was the perfect weekend away

"We had a lovely time here."
The house is beautiful and comfortable. You have everything you need provided. Theres plenty to see and do and the walks were great. The only thing that I was wary of is the stairs are very creaky and I walked down them sideways. You also cannot park your car outside the property you have to park on the main road.

"This was the most pet friendly place I’ve ever stayed."
Everything and more was provided for them! We booked a last minute stay away and we certainly chose the right property. We were the second guests to stay however you wouldn’t have known that. Kate, the owner was more than informative prior to the stay and even during our stay provided more than enough walks for our dogs.
The property was more than well equipped for the stay, perfect for a family and plenty of room.

"We had a wonderful Christmas stay at this superb cottage."
From the moment we stepped inside, we found everything needed for a great holiday had been anticipated. The cottage was spotlessly clean, and the owners had left a welcome tray, with wine/beer, biscuits and sweets, plus fresh milk in the fridge. The kichen is extremely well equipped with a great range of dining and cookware and cosy underfloor heating morning and night. The living room was a lovely retreat at the end of the day and the clear instructions for the wood-burning stove worked very well. The bedrooms were cosy and comfortable, including the sofa-bed in the snug. We noticed lots of thoughtful touches, like torches and toothbrush chargers in the bedside drawers, a basket of dog towels and dog waterbowl/toys and treats in the hall. Also games and mini juggling balls in the snug and local books in the living room. The juggling balls got more use than some of our Christmas presents! We enjoyed a short walk to the local pub and another for a couple of hours down by the river. The cottage is set in a conservation area, not far from the Peak District, though this seems quite an under-rated part of Derbyshire and lots to explore nearby. Parking is on the road, so be prepared to carry luggage down a short shared driveway, but this is clear before booking and we didn't find it a problem. Our overwhelming impression was that the owners want people to really enjoy this cottage and the local area during their stay and we certainly did!
