Kenilworth Castle!
At first a fortress, Kenilworth was transformed through the
centuries by its various occupants. But none put such a distinctive
stamp on the castle than Robert Dudley, who, in 1575, created an
ornate palace out of Kenilworth to impress his eminent love
interest, Queen Elizabeth I, adding private chambers for the queen
including a withdrawing chamber, bedroom and her very own dancing
chamber!
And Dudley didn't stop there. The hopeless romantic went on to
commission the Queen's very own Elizabethan gardens which,
after 400 years of neglect, have been reopened in the grounds of
Kenilworth Castle for the public to enjoy. Stride amongst the
obelisks and spheres dotted throughout the gardens, and spend a
soothing moment in one of the garden's perfumed arbours, taking
in the fine views of the deer park below.
When you've uncovered the trove of history within the ruins
of the castle, take the fifteen minute wall walk where youngsters
can burn off some energy. Or, pack a lunch and head to one of the
site's numerous picnicking spots; Kenilworth Castle is the
ideal place for an open-air feast amid exquisite pastoral
surroundings.
