Also there are many picturesque villages to enjoy including Waddington, Bolton by Bowland, Chipping, Slaidburn, Downham.

For those eager to get outside and explore the picturesque scenery of the area then Pendle Hill, home to the infamous witches of old, Forest of Bowland and Longridge Fell are all close by and offer a selection of leisurely strolls and more challenging trails as well as great cycle routes.

There is plenty of local wildlife and birdsong as well as deer being spotted on The Avenue and in the woods surrounding Stonyhurst.

Walk the Tolkien Trail also with JR Tolkien having reputedly written the Lord of the Rings Trilogy whilst visiting his son at the College.

Other nearby attractions include the Bowland Wild Boar Park, the breathtaking Whalley Arches and the National Trust owned property of Gawthorpe Hall, or head to the coast and spend a day at the seaside resort of Blackpool or Lytham St. Annes.

The city of Manchester is also accessible and offers a welcome change of scenery with plenty of amenities and attractions.

The town also boasts a Grade I listed castle which also offers a maze and a museum for the children to enjoy. On a rainy day you can visit the Edisford Sports Complex with its swimming pool and football pitch.
