“The 5 Youngs Yard cottage exceeded our expectations!”

We stayed 4 nights (October 2019), it was perfect for myself, wife and Cleo the dog. We loved every second of it. The guest information had loads of information on walks, local pubs and restaurants (which are all dog friendly). The town centre is a small walk away from the cottage (2-3 minutes). The kitchen had everything we needed (we cooked breakfast and dinner every night). The patio (off the main bedroom) was perfect for Cleo as it was fully enclosed and she had enough room to run around). The log burner was perfect to come back to after cold walks. The cottage overall was spotless and very welcoming. Walks: we recommend Aysgarth Falls - can be made into a long walk down to the river. Another good walk was seeing Richmond Castle then a short walk to Richmond waterfalls and on to Easby Abbey. Pubs: we recommend the Bishop Blaize. I mean it’s the only one we went to but we loved it in there - everyone is friendly, log fires and good food. We’ve never stayed in an upside down cottage before (You enter to the living room/kitchen and downstairs are the bedrooms/bathroom/patio) but it worked really well and didn’t phase us at all. We would defiantly return in the future.

The property

A beautiful stone built, two storey cottage in a quiet backwater just a short walk from the centre of the popular market town of Richmond.

Individually styled, this upside down cottage is a real delight and provides a first class holiday home, ideal for a romantic break or a week away with the family.

On entering the cottage from the roadside level guests will be met by a spacious open plan living area, consisting of a delightful sitting area with cosy woodburning stove, a bespoke modern kitchen and centre island providing a great place to sit and enjoy a lovely home cooked meal.

Charming throughout, the room enjoys a beautiful vaulted ceiling with the original A-frame beams, a stylish and modern oak floor and picture windows.

A staircase leads from the living area to two bedrooms and a modern bathroom and access to the lower ground floor walled garden, a great place to relax, have a favourite tipple and enjoy an evening barbecue in complete privacy.

A short walk takes guests into the lovely old town centre with a huge cobbled town square surrounded by shops, pubs, cafes, tearooms and restaurants.

Richmond is also famous for its fascinating Norman castle, where walks along the castle walls and down to the River Swale are a real delight.

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
