On a cottage holiday, for a fun day out you must visit Great Yarmouth. The largest coastal resort of the Norfolk coast, Great Yarmouth is a quintessential seaside resort town with plenty of golden sand, three amusement-filled piers and a whole host of typically British seaside attractions. The greater Yarmouth area has some fifteen miles of fine sandy beach, from Winterton in the north and reaching as far as Hopton to the south; ideal for families in summer or for bracing walks at other times of the year. The Golden Mile of the main promenade area is a busy, brash mixture of fun fair rides, arcades, slot machines, candyfloss and ice cream stands, horse-drawn and high-tech rides; family thrills and spills galore. Away from the front, the old town, with some interesting ancient buildings and well-presented museums, is enclosed within the well-preserved city walls. The Norfolk Nelson Museum celebrates the life and times of one of the country’s foremost admirals, whilst the Anna Sewel House stands on the birthplace of the famous Black Beauty author.
Traditional industry is remembered at the Great Yarmouth Potteries and Herring Smoking Museum, whilst the Time and Tide Museum and Elizabethan House in the historic South Quay area of town take a look back the life and times of the region’s population of yesteryear. Historic merchants’ houses and the impressive St. Nicholas church are testament to the importance of the town in olden days. One of the guided walks that run during the summer months can be a good way to discover that there’s much more than just a brash, British seaside town to Great Yarmouth. On the Esplanade, the visitor centre at Scroby Sands wind farm offers an alternative opportunity to connect with the environment and learn all about power generation from renewable energy sources. Amongst other things, you can literally try your hand at creating your own energy using the hand generator to power everyday household appliances.
