Backed by high cliffs on the southeast corner of the island, Ventnor basks in one of the sunniest and most sheltered locations on the Isle of Wight. This is a great location to rent an Isle of Wight holiday cottage, with the lovely beaches of the eastern side of the island on your doorstep, beautiful coastal walks, the shops, pubs, restaurants and green spaces of Victorian Ventnor and proximity to many of the island’s principal visitor attractions, a holiday here brings together many of the island’s considerable charms. The town itself has something of a history as a health spa; the unique microclimate and quasi-Mediterranean setting attracting convalescing Victorian visitors and today, a visit here still provides a lift to the spirit and the senses. In summer, flower-filled gardens cascade down towards the sea, Ventnor Botanic Gardens bloom with flowers, herbs and trees. There’s a children’s play area and a Temperate House, brimming with a profusion of exotic plants. Visit St. Boniface Down, the island’s highest point, and see the ancient Bronze Age burial mounds. The wide sweep of the Esplanade overlooks an excellent, sheltered family beach, and makes a pleasant place for a seaside stroll in either direction.

To the west, head to Steephill Cove and the Botanic Gardens, enjoying the panoramic cliff top views along the way, while a walk in an easterly direction leads to the quaint Victorian village of Bonchurch, favoured haunt of many a Victorian writer, not least of which was Charles Dickens, who wrote a section of David Copperfield whilst staying here. Keats and Tennyson were frequent visitors too. Ventnor’s Heritage Centre provides detail on this and other aspects of the town’s history, plus the Blackgang Chine, one of the island’s main tourist attractions and a theme park is guaranteed to keep those holidaying with children entertained for the day. Here you’ll find forty acres of dedicated family fun, with Fantasyland, Nurseryland and Frontierland just some of the themed areas providing thrills and spills galore.
