The seaside is synonymous with fish and chips. Picture newspaper-wrapped fresh fish and the crispiest, juiciest chips coated in salt and vinegar, with your side choice of mushy peas, curry, gravy or none of the above (we understand this is a heated debate across the UK and therefore the choice is yours). This British classic is best enjoyed on the waterfront, with the salty aroma of seawater drifting through the air and the fresh breeze against your face. Where better to enjoy this reality than in Whitby, Yorkshire’s idyllic and ever-popular seaside resort? Below are a few of our favourite fish and chip establishments in Whitby.

The Fisherman’s Wife

A finalist for Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award at this year’s Fish and Chip Awards, the Fisherman’s Wife is a very popular choice for locals and tourists.  Offering the freshest seafood and spectacular view of Whitby’s harbour, you can get more than just a portion of fish and chips here. Enjoy one of their seafood specials like crab or sea bass, plus the little ones will enjoy the child-friendly menu. One of five outlets in Yorkshire, the Fisherman’s Wife initially opened in Halton, Leeds, nearly 60 years ago.

Quayside

Winner of Fish and Chip Shop of the year in 2014 and Family Business of the Year in 2015 at The National Fish and Chip Awards, it’s easy to see why Quayside is so popular. It’s been run by the Fusco family since 1999 and occupies a very historic building that dates back to the 1820’s. Their menu offer a great selection of fish, with gluten free and child friendly options. They even share their fish and chip knowledge with local school children as part of a curriculum programme.

Silver Street Fisheries

With overwhelmingly positive reviews on Trip Advisor, Silver Street Fisheries is another Whitby favourite. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away on a charming side street, but well worth a visit. There’s a nice bench area to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, plus it’s a great place for a pit stop to refuel before continuing with a day of exploration in this fascinating town.
