Cragside House National Trust

The National Trust’s Cragside Country was a Victorian mansion that was decades ahead of its time. With their riches, art, and science, the Lord and Lady Armstrong made novel use of their resources in the house of hydroelectricity.

The humble beginnings of a rural getaway rapidly morphed into one of the most technologically sophisticated Victorian residences. The remarkable Art and Crafts House was constructed for modern living and efficiency and are lit by hydroelectricity and driven by hydraulics.

Cragside Gardens & Estate

A 1000-acre fantasy mountain scene created by inventor and armaments maker Lord William Armstrong and his wife Lady Margaret Armstrong.

The Pinetum’s twisting paths feature non-native conifers, including some of the UK’s tallest trees. As you descend the stone stairs through the Rock Garden, enjoy the chirping of birds in the adjoining woods and the peaceful murmur of the river. During the summer months, the Rhododendron Garden blooms spectacularly, framing the House in colour.

This architectural marvel is a three-levelled masterpiece featuring the Italian Terrace loggia, the quatrefoil pool, the orchard house, fernery, and Gothic Revival Clock Tower overlooking a coquet valley.
