Abbot Hall Art Gallery

Visit this incredible art gallery set in a stunning 18th century grade I listed building set on the banks of the River Kent in Kendal. The gallery boasts an exceptional collection of 18th to 20th century fine art and runs contemporary exhibitions each year, incorporating local artists.

Many of the 18th and 19th-century pieces were inspired by the surrounding Lake District scenery. Many of the great watercolourists of the period are included in the collection including J R Cozens, David Cox, Peter De Wint, John Sell Cotman, John Varley, and Edward Lear.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery also boasts a large selection of John Ruskin’s work, including drawings and watercolours of the Lake District as well as parts of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Moving into the modern era, the gallery features sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, Jena Arp, and Elisabeth Frink. You’ll also find modern landscape paintings and prints including pieces by David Hockney, Paula Rego and Lucian Freud.
