Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge

Start your walk at the National Trust car park, past the Britannia Inn. Go through the gate here that leads to the path along the river. The path is called the Cumbria Way and follows the River Brathay as it leads into Elterwater.

Keep following the path out of Elterwater until you reach a large gate, go through the gate. Keep going on the path on the other side through a field and up a small hill to another gate. Go through this gate and you will see a footbridge on the right. Go past the bridge and follow the path.

The path leads through a small, wooded area with a river to your right. After a while, you will see an opening in the fence with steps leading down to the falls. You can go down the steps, but caution is advised due to slippery surfaces. Make your way back up to the path to continue.

Once back on the path, keep going in the same direction of travel as before and you will reach Chesters in Skelwith Bridge. Here you’ll find delicious food and places to sit overlooking the river.
