Great Gable
Great Gable is truly a sight to behold in the Lake District, standing at nearly 3,000 feet! It’s amidst the most popular of the fells within the park and offers plenty of hiking routes
You can find this natural wonder amongst the Western Fells of the national park. Great Gable is not only known for its beauty but for its boulder-strewn summit, where a war memorial can be found.
Great Gable Walk
While there are numerous ways to hike the mountain, the most popular is Green Gable and Great Gable Walk from Seathwaite. The trail comprises seven miles and is pretty difficult to hike, so it’s best suited to expert hikers!
The trail begins at Seathwaite Farm. Walk through the farm and head west along the foot of Sourmilk Gill.
Ascend Gourmilk Gill, were wonderful views of Buttermere, Ennerdale and Crummock Water can be savoured. The Seathwaite Slabs also rest along here and make for a great unwinding spot.
Follow the path around Base Brown via Gillercomb before enjoying a peaceful, linear hike. After a while, you’ll reach the beginning of the uphill trail to Green Gable.
Venture to the top of Green Gable, before dropping down quickly and crossing Windy Gap. From here, begin the steep scramble up to the summit of Great Gable.
Marvellous views of Scafell Pike and Great Naples can be enjoyed from the rocky summit before making the descent to Styhead Tarn.
Follow the stream-side path to Styhead Gill and Greenhow Knott. From here, you’ll need to cross Stockey Bridge before following the path to the farm.
