Hardknott Roman Fort

Hardknott Roman Fort was established as early as the 2nd century AD under Hadrian’s rule. The fort was demilitarised in the 130s when the Romans reoccupied southern Scotland but was regarrisoned under Marcus Aurelius in the 160s before being abandoned in the early 3rd century.

Within the ruins you’ll find the remains of a stone bath house once used by soldiers to relax in. There were four rooms, including a circular room with its own furnace that is thought to have been used like a modern sauna.

The fort features the remains of stone walls and a main gate to the south. Directly opposite the south gate is the headquarters building which featured a courtyard flanked by narrow rooms. At the far end of the courtyard was the cross hall and a small temple with offices either side.
