Harewood Castle
The site of Harewood Castle was founded by the De Lisle family during the 12th century. It’s one of the oldest buildings on Harewood House‘s grounds.
In the 14th century, Sir William de Aldeburgh took over the site and fortified the castle. The new fortress was designed with comfort and security in mind
There were metal grilles covering the windows, indicating a need for defence. Additionally, the castle housed incredibly thick walls that contained access to internal stairs and walkways
Over time, de Aldeburgh’s descendants stayed in the castle. This went on for more than 200 years. However, in the 17th-century different residents took over until the castle became inhabitable.
Since the late 17th century, the castle has become a Grade I listed building. The set of ruins enjoys an overgrowth of lush greenery and a well worth a visit. It even affords views over Wharfe Valley!
