Jork Viking Centre, York
Jorvik Viking Centre began due to a five-year archaeological dig in York’s centre during the 1970s. This dig uncovered Viking-Age artefacts, leading to the opening of the Jorvik Viking Centre in 1984.
The museum itself does not have parking, however, due to its location in the city centre its within reach of Coppergate Car Park and the Q-Park Shambles parking garage.
The museum is open everyday between 10am-5pm, and tickets cost between £9.50-£13.50. Family bundles are available and kids under the age of five can visit for free!
During your time here you will find remains of 1,000-year-old houses, objects taken from excavations and Viking-age timbers. These can be seen in the artefacts gallery, which contains over 800 objects!
Afterwards, jump on board the ride experience to explore the unique collection of artefacts and immerse yourself in York’s fascinating Viking past. Here, a range of life-sized animatronics, including those of a leatherworker, blacksmith and a priest await. The Viking houses are an immersive touch and will make you feel like you’re travelling through the streets of Jorvik city!
The attraction often hosts exciting events, from special exhibitions to an annual festival. Groups can also receive 45-minute Viking workshops here, if booked in advance.
At the end of your visit, be sure to pay the Jorvik Viking Centre shop a visit, where you can choose from a collection of souvenirs and Old Norse treats.
