Tarn Hows

Tarn Hows was once three natural tarns but when the owner of Monk Coniston Estate bought it in the 1860s, he began a project to create one large tarn to feed his sawmill. He also carefully designed the landscape to feature trees planted in specific positions to highlight aspects of the landscape.

The conifers you see today were planted as a temporary measure to protect his saplings over the winter and were to be removed once the trees were more established. The landowner died and the conifers were never removed and can be seen dominating the area today.

The tarn has created a fantastic habitat for wildlife and is monitored by the National Trust.

A lovely day awaits at Tarn Hows…
