Directions

  1. Begin the walk at the centurion statue in the car park for Segedunum Fort at Wallsend (marking the official start/finish for Hadrian’s Way walk). Facing the centurion, turn right, following the sign for Hadrian’s Way. (Please note: this is locked by a gate outside working hours).
  2. Take a left at the traffic lights and walk through an industrial area. Soon pass over Hadrian’s Way path on a bridge, and then just before reaching a mini-roundabout take a sharp left. Upon reaching After 80 metres, at the reconstructed Roman Bath, bear left to go uphill onto a footpath. Turn left to follow the path which passes under the bridge you previously crossed.
  3. Continue straight over the road and follow the left footpath once crossed. Follow straight along the flat path, ignoring the right path signposted to Waverdale Avenue.
  4. Cross the road and continue along the path, following the signposts of an acorn to lead you along Hadrian’s Walk.
  5. After 150 metres continue straight across another road. Continue to cross bridges over roads and follow signs for Hadrian’s Way.
  6. Bear left at the fork following the signs for Hadrian’s Way and keeping the railings on your left. When you reach a grassy field on your left, bear left again (ignoring the sign for Hadrian’s Cycleway to the right). Continue through woodland.
  7. Take a sharp left to follow the path downhill towards the River Tyne. After 100 metres, turn right to follow the brown acorn to keep heading downhill, and then walk with the River Tyne on your left.
  8. Take the next left and keep close to the river, ignoring all right turns. Bear left after 400 metres onto the path close to the river and then bear left again onto the footpath as the road bends right.
  9. Once the path has turned towards the marina, turn left with the Marina Office on your left and St Peter’s Marina on the right. Cross over a drawbridge and bear left with the river to your left.

  22. Bear left at the fork in the path and continue straight on at the traffic lights, crossing the road and following signs for Wylam and Hadrian’s Way. Ignore the bridge to the left and footpath to the right.
  23. When the road bends right, bear left to join the footpath. Turn left to cross the wooden bridge and then bear left, with the car park on your right.
