Back British Tourism

By staying home today, we can travel tomorrow

As the UK continues to pull together to stop the spread of COVID-19, we as a country must stay home to save lives and protect the NHS.

This is a shared challenge, where everybody must be part of the solution. Schools are closed, events are cancelled, and businesses remain shut. We are in this together and today we must stay home.

The impact of Covid-19 has been huge on the UK travel and tourism industry. These are desperate times for many businesses with increasing numbers of visitors cancelling or postponing their trips at very short notice due to factors outside of their control.

We’re in this together

Since 2010 tourism has been the fastest growing sector in the UK in employment terms, accounting for 9.6% of total UK jobs and 9% of UK GDP; worth £126.9 billion. Tourism’s impact is amplified through the economy.

Deloitte estimates the tourism GVA multiplier to be 2.8 – meaning that for every £1,000 generated in direct tourism GVA there is a further £1,800 that is supported elsewhere in the economy through the supply chain and consumer spending. Source: www.visitbritain.org/visitor-economy-facts

However, this is at risk. Visit Britain is forecasting a £22 billion loss this year (compared to the pre-COVID forecast) for domestic holidays and day trips. Source: www.visitbritain.org/2020-tourism-forecast

Tourism is the backbone to local economies, villages and towns throughout the length and breadth of the UK. This isn’t just about supporting an industry, it’s about supporting local economies, the small business owners, the restaurants, the pubs, the local attractions. Let’s support Great Britain.

Stay Inspired. We’re ready when you are

As an industry, we ask you to join us in remaining positive and staying inspired. We can dream for the great days to come. Where we get back together again, reconnect with family and friends, spending precious time with those we love most. All of the great locations, businesses and experiences throughout the UK will wait for you. They will be here when this is over. They can’t wait to welcome you back, when it is safe to do so again.

For those of us who can, postponing our trips will help to protect British tourism, protect the locations we love most and provide something much needed to look forward to. Together let’s back British tourism.
