How to get to the Isle of Skye

Nestled amongst a cluster of islands, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, the Isle of Skye is renowned for its break-taking scenery and picturesque landscapes, making it one of the most sought-after locations in Scotland.

Travelling to Skye by road

Due to its rural location, travelling by car is most definitely the best option when planning your next trip to Skye. Coming from Glasgow and the south, take the A82 passing the magnificent peak of Glencoe. Then join onto the A87 for the remainder of the journey to Skye.

From Inverness and the north, join the A9 travelling across the Kessock Bridge. Then join the A835 until it meets with the A87 for the last leg of the journey.

Travelling to Skye by bus

If you are choosing to enjoy a staycation in one of the easy-access towns or villages, there are three buses daily running from Glasgow using Scottish Citilink. These journeys take between six and seven hours and drop you off at Portree, the capital town and the ideal base for exploring.

Coming from Inverness and the north, Scottish Citilink provide four daily buses with journey times between three and four hours. For further information please visit isleofskye.net/travel/access.

Travelling to Skye by train

Unfortunately, there are no railways on Skye.

However, you can travel by train from Glasgow to Mallaig and then catch the ferry to Armadale on the islands Southern tip. If you’re traveling from the north, catch the train from Inverness to Kyle then take the bus. For more information visit nationalrail.co.uk and directferries.co.uk.

Travelling to Skye by plane

The nearest airports to the Isle of Skye are Glasgow and Inverness, thereafter public transport or car hire are your best options to reach the simplistic beauty of the island.
