August is long gone so Cornwall is all about hunkering down, cosying up and chilling out – well, you could do that but isn’t it a little boring? Holidays are for living life at its fullest, whatever the time of year. Swap the squidgy sofa for the great outdoors and get out and enjoy Cornwall this autumn and winter…

1. Surfing

Autumn and winter activities in Cornwall - Surfing

For those in the know, the best time to go surfing is during the winter months. Forget about the cold icy waters as modern wetsuits take care of this. Think big regular swells and quieter beaches.  There’s nothing more magical than heading out into the ocean and feeling the thrill of Atlantic rollers, which hit up to 6-7ft in the winter. The sea is your playground!

Hook up with the ocean-mad team at Newquay Activity Centre, who offer surf lessons throughout the year.

2. Walking

There’s something very satisfying about wrapping up warm and facing the elements on a ‘blow-away-the-cobwebs’ kind of walk. Whether you strike out on the South West Coast Path to experience the mighty views or take cover amongst sheltered woodland, in Cornwall, you’ll find a pick of fantastic stomping grounds. Just bring your walking boots or a sturdy pair of wellies and you’re all set!

3. Coasteering

There’s no expiry date on the adrenaline rush that comes with coasteering. In fact, it reaches an ultimate high in the autumn and winter. Jumping off a cliff and plunging into Cornwall’s year-round turquoise waters is a guaranteed way to earn a place by the fire, just make sure you’re accompanied by an experienced coasteering instructor so that you can enjoy this activity safely.

4. Storm watching

Ok, we’ll let you indoors for this one. Take sanctuary from what the Cornish like to call ‘liquid sunshine’ in the comfort of a cosy café or super cool beachside hangout. As the elements rage and the skies darken, settle down behind rain-lashed windows to see the coastline take the wrath of Mother Nature. Marvel at the soaring waves, charging white horses and the pounding sea spray as you indulge in a warm cup of Cornish cream tea or feast on the freshest of seafood.

5. Super SUP

If you don’t fancy getting wet, but up for some unseasonal fun on the water, then this one is for you. Meet super stand-up paddle boarding, a supercharged version of SUP which sees up to eight people take to the ocean on a giant inflatable stand up paddle board. It’s totally unique and hilariously funny, especially when the games begin. Sessions include a chance to learn how to kneel and stand up paddle, perfect paddle strokes, navigate the coastline, and negotiate the swell and waves back to the beach. You’ve just got to try it!

Super SUP is offered exclusively by Newquay Activity Centre.
