Newlyn Cottages
Located between Penzance and Mousehole, the medieval town of Newlyn
oozes atmosphere and Newlyn holiday cottages offer a fascinating
look at life in Cornwall's busiest fishing port.
Down at the quayside watch Newlyn's huge fleet land their
catch of mackerel, John Dory, turbot, bass, cod, lemon sole,
sardines etc - the choice is second to none! Wander around the
stalls of the bustling fish market and view them in their glory,
carefully stacked in ice, eyes bright, skin gleaming. Then head for
a local chippie and sample freshly battered fish in paper.
Newlyn Fish Festival
A great time to book a Newlyn cottage holiday is over August
Bank Holiday when the famous Fish Festival is held. Expect the
harbour to be brimming with boats, the quayside to be thronging
with crowds and the ambience to be buzzing. You'll find cookery
demos by top local chefs, live bands and other performers, fun on
the water and plenty of fishy stuff for kids.
But there's more to Newlyn than fish! Explore the tiny,
winding streets lined with granite cottages, inviting shops and
amazing galleries - in particular, the Newlyn Art Gallery,
showcasing an exquisite collection of local, national and
international work. It's easy to see why generations of artists
have made their home in Newlyn, and if you too have found yourself
inspired why not sign up for a course at the Newlyn School of Art? Walk
along the pebble beach to the promenade of Penzance - it's an
easy one-mile walk each way. Or follow the South West Coast Path to
Mousehole. Add gorgeous beaches, St. Michael's Mount and the
Minack Theatre all a short drive away and there is a lot to be said
for a Newlyn cottage holiday!
